When you take deep breaths, it helps to slow down your heart rate and calm your nervous system. There are a few different ways you can do deep breathing exercises. One way is to inhale for a count of four, hold your breath for a count of seven, and then exhale for a count of eight.

Another way is to inhale through your nose for a count of four, then exhale through your mouth for a count of eight. Whichever way you choose, make sure you're taking deep, belly breaths. You should feel your stomach rise and fall with each breath.
