My Tapping Confession: This is Embarrassing
My Tapping Confession: This is Embarrassing (But Too Good Not to Share!)
Oh, the things we do to ourselves! Picture this: In 2016, I picked up a book called The Tapping Solution at a local juice shop (of course, where else would I find such a novel idea?) and got utterly intrigued. So as any good ol’ Generation X-er would do, I took to YouTube to educate myself on this odd voodoo practice (pun absolutely intended).
A few videos later, I was tapping away, feeling my anxiety drain down the same sinkhole as my last acai bowl bits. Then, as life's distractions took over, I left my tapping to gather dust, with my book as a physical manifestation of my forgotten self-care practice.
Now, fast forward to 2020. Breast Cancer came knocking during the all-time big bad pandemic. Freaked out and petrified, my body remembered that tapping thing that once made me feel like I had the emotional stability of a Zen monk. So I started my oh-so-sloppy tapping practice, and wouldn't you know it, I felt better quicker than you can say, "Tap into your healing"!
Seriously now, it took a life crisis to bring me back to tapping. *Face palm*
So, why are so many of us hesitant to try this magic finger dance? Let's count the ways. One: It looks weird. Two: It sounds like a hoax. And three: Did I mention it looks weird? Of course, there's significant science behind this practice, but our initial David Blaine vibes overrule our desire to tap away our troubles.
Well, folks, it turns out Tapping, or Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), is backed up by scientific research showing it reduces anxiety, depression, and even PTSD symptoms. It's all about those energy meridians getting unstuck, just like the freeway at 2 am. Who knew, right?
So there I was, in the middle of my breast cancer scare, hitting my forehead with my fingers (elegantly, I might add) and realizing that if I hadn't abandoned my newfound skill, I might have been dodging stress like a ballerina.
As I stared at my dusty book, guilt washed over me. My brain tried to justify the hiatus: stress led to more stress, which led to even more stress until I had no time for stress relief. If only I'd remembered that Tapping would make everything else more manageable.
And so, dear readers here's your call to action. Learn from my mistake! Pick up your fingers and start tapping away ALL that stress. Ladies, anxiety, fear, and uncertainty are unwelcome guests in our lives, so let's kick them out like the classy individuals we are.
In all seriousness, we can learn to live happier, healthier lives if we tap into this simple technique (and maybe chuckle a bit as we do it). So don't wait until you're facing your Everest of anxieties; start your tapping journey today!
