Does drinking increase my risk for a breast cancer recurrence?

Did you know that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States? I am sure you did know.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. While there are many factors that can increase your risk of developing breast cancer, including genetics and age, evidence suggests that alcohol consumption may also play a role.

So what can you do to reduce your risk of Breast Cancer or of a recurrence ?

One important step is to limit your alcohol consumption. Keep reading for more information on how alcohol consumption affects Breast Cancer risk, and tips on how to reduce your intake.

1. The percentage of women who develop breast cancer is far lower in those who drink alcohol less than 1 unit a day.

2. Heavy drinkers ( or 3.5 units per day ) are at a higher risk for developing breast cancer than those who drank less than 1 unit.

3. Alcohol consumption may increase the levels of estrogen in the body, which is linked to an increased risk for breast cancer.

4. Alcohol can also interfere with the way our bodies process and eliminate hormones, which could lead to an increased risk for cancer development.

5. Alcohol also increases our anxiety and decreases our ability to sleep well.

Here are some tips to reduce your intake

1. Drink sparkling water with a squeeze of lemon or lime. Fancy it up in a proper wine glass. ( Kendall’s favorite tip. At a splash of pomegranate juice to increase antioxidants. )

2. Enjoy a delicious smoothie made with fruit and yogurt. This can be especially satisfying on a hot day.

3. Sip on hot tea or herbal tea. Fennel tea is known to reduce your cravings for sugar and can be a really asset.

4. Go on a walk outside. Give yourself some space.

5. Focus on just how great you will feel in the morning.
